SOMALIA: FAMINE FOR PROFIT AND THE EAST AFRICAN FOOD CRISIS
"While a percentage of people around the world enjoy the supersized culture of fast food Globalization in our age of 3D HDTV, quadruple-decker cheese burgers and senseless commodity overproduction, three billion people or nearly half the world’s population individually sustain themselves on less than two USD per day amidst an annual surge in the global price of food, which has increased by thirty seven percent since last year"

Local action
Yesterday evening I attended a town hall meeting put on by 8th District Representative Tim Ackert, who also lives in Coventry. I asked him to state his position on climate change. His answer, paraphrased, was that he didn't pay much attention to it. Wrong answer. I think his constituency should be aware of his positions and where he gets them, so I am posting two things.
and one slide from his presentation.
The first thing I noticed was that he was using the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) as a source of information. You can check the rest out yourself. Once I see ALEC I cringe. Here is one of their articles EPA’s Regulatory Train Wreck.
His view that Connecticut's Earned Income Credit should be reduced by a third also offended me. He knows my son, who works as an advocate for Connecticut Department of Developmental Services. Tim, would you care to look him in the eye and explain the reasoning behind why you want to reduce a program that he and others like him benefit from? His income is in the 4 figures range. Everyone else. Look at the picture on DDS's home page. Would you cut their benefits?
I cannot support Tim Ackert as I see very little in his positions that I feel represent me.

The Year of the Witch
"If women and girls everywhere were treated as equal to men in rights, dignity, and opportunity, we would see political and economic progress everywhere. So this is not only a moral issue, which, of course, it is. It is an economic issue and a security issue, and it is the unfinished business of the 21st century."

Walmart workers speak out about abusive working conditions
In the wake of a Gawker story that shared less-than-flattering emails from Walmart workers, the retail giant asked employees to send Gawker’s Hamilton Nolan some stories that attested to the greatness of the company. While some of the respondents did Walmart’s bidding, others bravely their true thoughts on the company’s practices, right on their employer’s own website.

Talking to stupid people
I have spent many of the past days talking to what I call stupid people and I just feel like venting.
Here is my definition of stupid: I+L=S (Ignorance + Laziness = Stupid)
There is nothing wrong with ignorance. It simply means you don't know. I don't know most things. Every day I am reminded that there is more and more that I am ignorant of. But if you are too lazy to look up the available facts? That I define as STUPIDITY. Most people I talk to about environmental are stupid.
The bigger problem though, are those who are not ignorant of the science but who are so greedy that they will sell their own children's future for a few worthless coins. These people are pure evil.
I hope that I have offended a great many people. Perhaps some of the stupid people will look at the facts and stop voting side issues. That takes you out of the stupid bin. It's really that easy.
As for the evil people. You are on notice. People are becoming less stupid every day and they are very angry. While stupid can be eliminated by knowledge, evil will be eliminated by a very large group of ex-stupid people.
........ end rant ........

We Are All Apocalyptic Now: On the Responsibilities of Teaching, Preaching, Reporting, Writing, and Speaking Out
American Intellectuals' Widespread Failure to Stand Up to Billionaires and Authoritarian Power
The majority of intellectual work in the U.S. is actually helping to prop up our unjust distribution of wealth and power.
In the face of multiple, cascading crises—economic and ecological, political and cultural—it is more important than ever to confront the reality of the threats we face. Based on a calm apocalypticism and a common-sense approach to intellectual life, We Are All Apocalyptic Now offers a framework for understanding our moment in history and the obligations of those who are trying to communicate that understanding to a wider world.

A letter sent to UPS:
July 20, 2009
Mr. Mike Eskew
CEO
United Parcel Service
55 Glenlake Pkwy. NE
Atlanta, GA 30328
Dear Sir,
I am writing to complain about your company’s service and policies.
A package was to be delivered to my home on Thursday July 16th. When I arrived there was a UPS notice on the door informing me that a signature was required and that I could sign the back and leave the notice on the door. This I did.
On Friday the 17th I returned to find no package, just another slip saying the same thing. I called UPS to ask what the problem was. I was told that the package required a signature in person. As you can see from the first two notice copies, included below, they did not request an in person signature. I was told there was no Saturday delivery and I could either have it delivered to an alternate address or have it help at your office at 90 Locust Street in Hartford, CT. I asked to have the package held (your computer account of my delivery record confirmes this) and that I would pick it up after work around 5:30 pm on the 20th.
After work I drove to UPS and found that my package was left on the truck and I couldn’t pick it up. I was told I could come back after 8:00 pm and pick it up (a drive from eastern CT), have it sent to an alternate address, schedule a time when I was there to sign, or stop by again after work on the 21st. I asked if I could sign there and have it delivered the next day…No. I chose the last option.
Your hours do not allow a working person to have a package delivered. I have no neighbor that could accept it as they also work.
During my visit to your Hartford office I was told that UPS does have Saturday delivery but it didn’t apply to my shipment, which was ground.
This is not how a company retains customers. Here’s what would have been done if I ran the Hartford office.
1. After knowing that I was given two incorrect notices, the package should have been delivered on Saturday as I it were air and not ground.
2. Allow the package to be signed for at the office for delivery the next day.
3. After I drove to the office to find my package still on some truck, an employee should have been dispatched to deliver the package to my home to as soon as the truck returned.
As your rules didn’t allow for these options, here is what I will do for Brown.
1. I will discourage anyone I can from using UPS, giving them a copy of this letter.
2. A copy of this letter will be posted on my blog and other public forums.
3. A copy of this letter is being sent to the company I purchased from explaining that I cannot purchase from them again.
4. When I am making a purchase, if the shipping method is UPS, a copy of this letter will be included in the message explaining why I will not purchase from them. I can buy the same product from another vendor that uses FedEx or U.S.P.S.
Sincerely,

Florida Journalism?
News anchor on Biden interview: 'I'm a journalist' - CNN.com
Barbara West: You may recognize this famous quote. "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs." That's from Karl Marx. How is Sen. Obama not being a Marxist if he's intending to spread the wealth around?
What a ridiculous question.
I think I'm a Marxist. If it were "From each according to their ability and to each according to their need" then shouldn't the Wall Street executives and bankers pushing toxic loans be earning minimum wage (their need) when their ability is negative? But that I could negotiate a golden parachute that allows me to take millions away if I'm so bad that my company needs to fire me with cause?
When historically the wealthy are paying less in taxes than ever before, I agree with Senator Biden. Are your serious? Wealth has been distributed - to the top 1 percent.
